2% Increase in the Reported Rape Cases in the Philippines: 2001-2002 Ref No.: SS-200307-SS1-01

Rape is committed:

1. by a man who shall have carnal knowledge of a woman under any of the following circumstances:

1. through force, threat or intimidation;
2. when the woman is deprived of reason or otherwise unconscious;
3. by means of fraudulent machination or grave abuse of authority; and
4. when the offended party is under twelve (12) years of age or is demented, even though none of the circumstances mentioned above be present; and

2. by any person who, under any of the circumstances mentioned in paragraph 1 hereof, shall commit an act of sexual assault by inserting his penis into another person's mouth or anal orifice, or any instrument, or object, or any other part of the body such as fingers or toes, into the genital or anal orifice of another person.

This report is an update of the statistical series on rape cases published by the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) in 2002.

Total Reported Rape Cases and Rape Incidence in the Philippines, 1998-2002

• An average of seven (7) women were raped daily in the Philippines in 2002, the same average recorded in 2001.
• The rape incidence in 2002 per 100,000 population stood at 3.26, the lowest posted since 1998

Reported Rape Cases and Incidence by Region: 2001-2002

• Eight regions have rape incidences higher than the national average of 3.26 ( IV, V, VII, VIII, IX, X, XII, CAR).
• Region IV posted the highest number of reported rape cases among all regions for 2002 with 476

Comparison of Reported Rape Cases vs. Other Index Crimes

• Among all the index crimes, reported rape cases had the lowest increase from 2001 to 2002
• Three regions exhibited both decreases in the number of reported rape cases and in the number of other index crimes from 2001 to 2002 (Regions IX, XI, XII)
