1991-1998
National Education Expenditure Accounts (NEXA)

Dep-Ed spending showed a
continuous uptrend from 1991 to 1998

Total general government expenditures on education in 1998 stood at P115.0 billion. The biggest bulk was contributed by the Department of Education (DepEd) with 72.7 percent. Other national government agencies together accounted for a fifth (19.8 percent) of these expenditures.

Starting with a 1.9 percent share in 1991, local government units managed to gradually increase their share to 6.7 percent in 1993. However, this proportion remained practically unchanged for six years with a recorded share of 7.0 percent in 1998.

Dep-Ed spending showed a continuous uptrend from P32.2 billion in 1991 to P87.0 billion in 1998. A very large share of its budget (63.9 percent in 1991 and further going up to 87.3 percent in 1998) was spent for its main business of providing basic education.

The remaining amounts were allocated to ancillary services and middle-level skills development, with minimal allocations for other uses of funds, job-related training, and higher education.
