Value of Production Index of Manufacturing Industry Declines
by 11.2 Percent in October 2009![]()

Based on the latest Monthly Integrated Survey of Selected Industries (MISSI) results estimated by the National Statistics Office (NSO), Value of Production Index (VaPI) for the manufacturing industry in October 2009 declined by 11.2 percent compared to October 2008. Ten major sectors registered double-digit contractions in year-on-year growth rates, with leather products posting the biggest decline at 42.1 percent, followed by furniture and fixtures at 35.3 percent, beverages at 34.2 percent, petroleum products at 31.1 percent, paper and paper products at 25.8 percent, footwear and wearing apparel at 25.7 percent, fabricated metal products at 18.5 percent, electrical machinery at 17.3 percent, machinery except electrical at 12.9 percent, and textiles at 11.1 percent. Meanwhile, the non-metallic mineral and tobacco products sectors posted double-digit positive year-on-year growth rates of 18.0 and 13.1 percent, respectively.
Likewise, the Volume of Production Index (VoPI) went down by 6.4 percent in October 2009 compared with the same month the previous year. Double-digit negative year-on-year growth rates were registered in the leather products at 43.8 percent, beverages at 34.9 percent, footwear and wearing apparel at 33.8 percent, petroleum products at 22.3 percent, textiles at 18.1 percent, paper and paper products at 13.6 percent, fabricated metal products at 12.4 percent, and wood and wood products at 10.6 percent. On the other hand, five sectors posted double-digit positive year-on-year growth rates: basic metals, which increased by 26.0 percent; miscellaneous manufactures, 24.9 percent; non-metallic mineral products, 16.9 percent; rubber and plastic products, 16.3 percent; and tobacco products, 14.9 percent.
The MISSI is a designated statistical activity under Executive Order 352, Designation of Statistical Activities That Will Generate Critical Data for Decision-Making of the Government and the Private Sector, issued in July 1996. Per EO, preliminary results of the MISSI should be made available 45 days after the reference month. The NSO released the October 2009 data on December 23, 2009 as scheduled in its 2009 Advance Release Calendar but 8 days delayed as per EO 352.
