Employment Rate Slightly Higher in January 2008
(posted 04 April 2008)

As released by the National Statistics Office (NSO), the results of the January  2008 round of the Labor Force Survey (LFS) revealed that of the total labor force estimated at 36.4 million, 92.6 percent were employed, a slight increase of 0.4 percentage point from the January 2007 survey.  Of the employed persons, 18.9 percent were underemployed, better by 2.6 percentage points from 21.5 percent in January 2007. The labor force participation rate, however, was 63.4 percent, lower by 1.4 percentage point from 64.8 percent in January 2007.

The conduct of the Labor Force Survey is a designated statistical activity of the NSO under Executive Order No. 352, Designation of Statistical Activities that will Generate Critical Data for Decision-Making of the Government and the Private Sector, issued on July 1, 1996.  With the January 2007 LFS round, the NSO used the 2000 Census-based population projections to generate the labor force statistics in compliance with NSCB Resolution No.1 series of 2005 entitled “Adoption of Methodology Used in Generating the 2000 Census of Population and Housing-based National Population Projections”
