Gross Value Added in Agriculture, Hunting, Forestry and Fishing

Agriculture slows down

Agriculture and Forestry slowed down to 1.0 percent from 4.4 percent last year, pulled down by the declines posted by Sugarcane, Palay, Mango, and Cassava. On the other hand, the major contributors to growth were Poultry, Livestock, Corn, and Coconut including copra.

Palay and Sugarcane pulls down Agriculture growth

Palay declined by 1.1 percent from a double digit growth of 15.6 percent recorded last year.  The decline can be attributed to the flood that ravaged palay farms in Davao and change in harvest schedules in Western Visayas, Cagayan Valley and ARMM.

Sugarcane likewise posted a decline of 6.5 percent from 26.6 percent growth. Frequent rains during the period hampered harvesting, specifically, in the provinces of Bukidnon, Davao del Sur and Lanao del Sur.  In addition, there was crop shifting to palay in Tarlac and to oil palm in Maguindanao.

On the other hand, Corn grew by 5.4 percent from 19.4 percent posted last year.  Favorable weather conditions and more usage of hybrid seeds led to area expansion and increases in yield, respectively, in Luzon areas.

Meanwhile, Coconut including copra rebounded to 5.6 percent from a decline of 6.1 percent.  This can be attributed to the recovery of coconut trees from the El Niño phenomenon of 2010 and the greater demand for young coconut due to the onset of summer and the increasing popularity of “buco juice” as health drink leading to the increased harvesting of young coconuts.

Banana sustained its growth of 2.0 percent from 2.7 percent registered in 2011.  This can be ascribed to the expansion in area harvested, number of bearing trees and bigger fruits in Davao Region, Caraga, Ilocos Region, Northern Mindanao, Central and Eastern Visayas.

Mango, on the other hand, declined, albeit at a slower pace, by 6.0 percent from 6.4 percent due to pest infestation and damages from rain showers.  Likewise, Cassava declined by 2.7 percent from a growth of 4.3 percent affected by continuous rainfall and forced stoppage of milling operations due to low supply.

Meanwhile, Pineapple rebounded to 5.9 percent from a decline of 2.9 percent. This was due to the expansion of area by commercial farms in Northern Mindanao, harvest of bigger fruit sizes Eastern Visayas and Davao Region, and the high demand for pineapple which encouraged more harvesting in Bicol Region.

Likewise, Coffee turned around by 8.4 percent from a decline of 10.8 percent with the favorable weather conditions and intensified harvesting due to good demand for Robusta variety.  Rubber upped its growth by 7.7 percent from 6.4 percent with the increase frequency of tapping stimulated by the satisfactory price of rubber in the market.

Similarly, Other Crops rebounded to 1.6 percent from a decline of 2.1 percent as most of the major crops under Other crops increased production.

Poultry grew by 7.0 percent from its year ago growth of 3.9 percent due to high demand for roasted chicken in highly urbanized areas of Luzon and Visayas.  Increase in laying flocks and higher egg–laying efficiency ratio were also noted in Central Luzon, CALABARZON, and the Visayan Regions.

In the same way, Livestock grew by 3.2 percent from 0.5 percent recorded last year due to increased number of hogs slaughtered which resulted from high demand from home based meat processors as well as hotels and restaurants in highly urbanized areas of the country.

Fishing dives

Fishing declined further to 3.8 percent from 3.1 percent recorded last year with the drop in commercial and municipal fisheries products. The production slump can be attributed to the implementation of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) of fish moratorium for sardines and the high cost of fishing operations.  Bad weather also hampered fishing operations in Zamboanga Peninsula.Aquaculture production also contracted with poor quality of fingerlings, high salinity of water and low survival rate of fish due to intense heat.
