Gross Value Added in Industry

Industry contracts

Industry sector contracted by 4.4 percent from 7.6 percent growth recorded the previous year.  The decline of Industry comes from Manufacturing with negative 5.35 percentage points and Electricity, Gas and Water with negative 0.25 percentage point, the two sectors adversely affected by the global financial crisis.


The decline of the sector could not be offset by the positive contributions of Mining & Quarrying and Construction.

Mining and Quarrying on the upswing

Mining and Quarrying posted a double-digit growth of 26.9 percent from 0.7 percent the same period last year as all its subsectors contributed positively to its growth.  Other Non Metallic Mining contributed the most to the growth of the sector with 11.0 percentage point and posted a growth of 40.5 percent from 12.9 percent. Gold Mining, meanwhile, rebounded to 20.7 percent from negative 22.1 percent; Copper Mining, soared to 173.3 percent from negative 8.6 percent; Nickel Mining, 27.2 percent from 77.5 percent; Stone Quarrying, Clay and Sandpits, 11.9 percent from 3.8 percent; Crude oil, Natural Gas & Condensate. 10.8 percent from 4.0 percent; Other Metallic Mining, bloated to 471.5 percent from negative 81.6 percent; and, Chromium Mining, the least contributor to the sector’s growth with 0.03-percentage point, bounced back to 89.5 percent from negative 76.0.

Manufacturing slumps

Still bearing the effects of the global financial crisis, the Manufacturing sector flanked again for the third consecutive quarter with negative 7.6 percent from a growth of 5.4 percent recorded last year.

The slumped in the manufacturing sector can be attributed to the poor performance of the following sub sectors:  Products of Petroleum and Coal, 0.9 percent to negative 20.0 percent; Electrical Machinery, negative 7.4 percent to negative 9.4 percent; Footwear and Wearing Apparel, 7.2 percent to negative 20.8 percent; Food manufacturing, 14.4 percent to negative 1.8 percent; and, Chemical and Chemical Products, 3.1 percent to negative 8.3 percent.

On the other hand, the sub sectors that contributed positively were:  Transport Equipment, which rebounded to a double-digit growth of 21.4 percent from negative 4.2 percent; Tobacco manufacture, with a slower paced growth of 8.2 percent from 42.7 percent; and, Non Metallic Mineral Products, 4.6 percent from 12.3 percent.

Construction decelerates

Construction decelerated to 1.3 percent from the double-digit growth of 20.5 percent recorded last year.

Electricity losses brilliance

Electricity and Water industries reversed its growth of 9.2 percent posted the previous year to negative 2.2 percent.  With the increased cost of production, Electricity reversed its growth of 9.8 percent posted last year to negative 2.7 percent.   Meanwhile, the water sub sector rebounded to a growth of 6.6 percent from negative 0.1 percent posted last year.
