Second Quarter 2009
Gross National Product & Gross Domestic Product
by Expenditure Shares

Exports of Goods and Services

Total Merchandise Exports contracts

The country’s total merchandise exports reversed its growth of 5.9 percent registered in 2008 to negative 22.4 percent.  The weak performance of the sector was attributed to the slump in both Principal Merchandise Exports and Other Exports (which include electronic products) to negative 26.5 percent from negative 6.7 percent and negative 21.8 percent from a growth of 18.1 percent, respectively.  The negative growth of Others was the lowest since the fourth quarter of 1998.

The principal exports that pulled down the growth of Merchandise Exports were:  Semiconductors and Electric Microcircuits, plunged deeper to negative 27.0 percent from negative 11.0 percent; Finished Electrical Machinery, negative 27.8 from negative 13.7 percent; Garments, negative 32.1 percent from a growth of 6.2 percent; Gold from Copper Ores, negative 62.1 percent from 8.0 percent; and, Crude Coconut Oil, negative 35.3 from 7.1 percent;

The top Merchandise Exports that contributed to the growth were: Desiccated Coconut, 25.3 percent from negative 1.3 percent; Copra Oil and Cake, 84.0 percent from negative 5.9 percent; Cathodes & Section of Cathodes of Refined Copper, grew, albeit slower, by 4.5 percent from 9.0 percent; Petroleum Naphtha, rebounded to 23.3 percent from negative 33.8 percent; and, Prepared Tuna, 4.5 percent from 46.3 percent.

Exports of Non-Factor Services increases

Exports of Non-Factor Services accelerated to 15.2 percent in the second quarter of 2009 from 7.3 percent recorded last year. Miscellaneous Services, which includes business process outsourcing services, buoyed the growth of the sector with its robust growth of 42.6 percent from 19.3 percent.

On the other hand, the growth of the sector was pulled down by the lackluster performance of the following sub sectors: Transportation Services, plunged deeper to negative 34.0 percent from negative 13.0 percent; Insurance reversed to negative 75.6 percent from 106.1 percent; and, Travel turned to negative 2.2 percent from 5.2 percent.
