Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE)

Personal Consumption Expenditure weakens

On the expenditure side, the continued rise in prices resulted in lower consumer spending at 0.8 percent from 5.1 percent a year ago.

Food expenditures, which accounted for 53.9 percent of total PCE, grew by 2.8 percent from 5.1 percent registered in 2008. The expenditure items that recorded higher growths compared to the previous year were: Transportation and Communication, 4.1 percent from 12.2 percent; Household operations, 2.7 percent from 2.8 percent; Miscellaneous expenses, 1.1 percent from 5.0 percent; Fuel, light and water, 2.8 percent from 1.1 percent; and, Household furnishings, 0.7 percent from 11.3 percent.

On the other hand, the following expenditures posted decelerated growths: Clothing and footwear, negative 24.8 percent from 4.9 percent; Tobacco, negative 38.7 percent from negative 6.8 percent; and, Beverages, negative 11.0 percent from 2.9 percent.
