Exports of Goods and Services

Total Exports dive

Total Exports dived deeper to negative 18.2 percent from negative 7.7 percent last year as Merchandise Exports registered a higher double-digit negative growth in the first quarter of 2009.

Total Merchandise Exports still down

The country’s total merchandise exports plunged deeper to negative 24.6 percent in the current quarter of 2009 from negative 10.9 percent in 2008. The lackluster performance of Merchandise Export was attributed to the slumped in both Principal Merchandise Exports and Other Exports to negative 30.5 percent from negative 13.7 percent and negative 20.1 percent from 7.1 percent, respectively.

The top five contributors to the growth of merchandise exports were: Cathodes & Section of Cathodes of Refined Copper, which rebounded to 24.5 percent from negative 31.5 percent; Prepared tuna, 46.0 percent from 52.4 percent; Desiccated Coconut, 25.5 percent from negative 19.0 percent; Centrifugal sugar, 41.6 percent from negative 10.2; and, copper concentrates, 33.2 percent from negative 26.9 percent.

Growth of Merchandise Exports was pulled down by the following commodities: Semiconductors and Electric Microcircuits, slid further to negative 45.4 percent from negative 0.7 percent; Finished Electrical Machinery, negative 37.6 percent from negative 45.4 percent; Crude Coconut Oil, plunged to negative 50.9 percent from a growth of 155.8 percent; Garments, negative 16.0 percent from negative 8.4 percent; and, Ignition Wiring Sets, negative 62.3 percent from a growth of 4.0 percent.

Export of Non-Factor Services decelerates

Exports of Non-Factor Services decelerated to 4.9 percent in the first quarter of 2009 from 5.9 percent. Contributing to the growth of Non-Factor Services were: Miscellaneous Services, which includes business process outsourcing services, maintained its double digit growth of 24.5 percent from 15.4 percent; Transportation, rebounded to 4.6 percent from negative 23.0 percent; Insurance, with a remarkable growth of 86.1 percent from 28.2 percent; and, Government, 16.5 percent from 36.9 percent.

On the other hand, Travel declined by 14.4 percent from a growth o f 8.7 percent.
