Consumer spending decelerates

Expenses for Food, which accounted for 53.5 percent of total Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE), grew by 4.9 percent from 6.1 percent. Other expenditure expenses that recorded slower growths during the quarter were: Transportation/Communication, up by 7.6 percent from 8.7 percent; Miscellaneous expenses, up by 4.2 percent from 6.2 percent; Clothing and Footwear, up by 4.8 percent from 5.0 percent. Meanwhile, Household Furnishing rebounded to 6.2 percent from negative 3.3 percent and Household Operations grew by 2.4 percent from 1.9 percent. Both Beverages and Tobacco maintained the same growth posted in 2007 with 4.3 percent and 2.9 percent, respectively.

On the other hand, expenditures in Fuel, Light and Water declined by 0.6 percent from a growth of 7.2 percent in the previous year.
