Gross Value Added in Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry

AFF decelerates

AFF, which accounted for 15.0 percent of total GDP, grew by 2.5 percent lower than the 5.7 percent growth recorded last year, and contributed 0.4 percentage point to the total GDP growth.  Biggest contributors to growth of AFF were Palay, Fishery and Banana.

Palay, Banana and Poultry propels Agriculture growth

Coming from a 4.7 percent growth in 2007, Palay soared to a double-digit growth of 10.2 percent this year.  The double-digit growth was attributed to the movements of harvest from the fourth quarter to the third quarter in Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, MIMAROPA, Wesern Visayas and Caraga.  Likewise, the early onset of rainfall allowed more plantings specifically in rainfed areas of  Western Visayas and Caraga Regions.

In addition, the early release of irrigation water and the use of early maturing varieties resulted to increased output of palay.

Corn declined by 11.1 percent from a substantial growth of 14.0 percent registered last year.  The production losses of corn were attributed to Typhoons Frank, Karen and Niña, which hit the country during the quarter, and the decline of corn output in the third quarter due to the movement of harvest to the second quarter.

Sugarcane, on the other hand, posted a remarkable growth of 54.6 percent from a negative 9.6 percent in the same period last year.  This was largely due to the extended milling operations of sugar millers in Batangas and Negros Occidental up to August coupled with the extension to July of sugar millers operations in Camarines Sur, Negros Oriental and Davao del Sur.

Coconut grew by 1.4 percent from 1.9 percent last year, bolstered by the high demand for copra together with good market price and the increased demand for young coconut from the processors of “buco” juice and coco-based delicacies.  This induced the Visayas and Mindanao coconut producing regions to increase their production during the quarter.

Banana improved to a higher growth of 19.0 percent from 6.1 percent posted during the third quarter of last year, as the increased demand from both local and export markets induced area expansion in North and South Cotabato and Davao Region.  Favorable weather condition boosted the growth of Banana in Northern Mindanao and Central Visayas.

Other Crops, on the other hand, dipped to negative 0.6 percent from the 5.4 percent growth recorded in the same period of last year.  High farm cost, notably in prices of pesticides and fertilizers, forced the vegetable farmers of Benguet and Mountain province to scale down production during the period.  Moreover, Typhoons Cosme and Frank wreaked havoc to mango production in Zambales, Ilocos and Central Visayas

Livestock grew by meagerly by 0.7 percent from 1.4 percent.  This was due to the low stock level of hog fatteners coupled with decreases in the number of animals slaughtered in abattoirs. Cholera scare, particularly in Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central and Southern Luzon, Bicol and Metro Manila, contributed to the decline. Hog production, which constitutes about 80 percent of the livestock production, grew slightly by 0.6 percent.

In contrast, Poultry rebounded to a growth of 3.2 percent from negative 0.3 percent a year ago.  Increased chicken broiler production, higher inventory of layers and better egg-laying efficiency ratio, particularly, in Central Luzon and CALABARZON contributed to the growth in poultry.

Fishery decelerates

Fishery slowed down its growth from 9.9 percent registered last year to 4.7 percent this year as the high fuel cost during the period affected commercial fishing activities.  The increase in aquaculture production in Bulacan and Pampanga was not enough to surpass the growth of the sector registered during the previous year.

Forestry picks up

Forestry grew by 7.2 percent in the third quarter of 2008 from a negative growth of 17.7 percent registered in the previous year.
