Gross Value Added in Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry

AFF gains strength

Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry, which accounted for 17.3 percent of total GDP, gained strength at 5.6 percent growth from 3.6 percent last year, contributing 1.0 percentage point to the total GDP growth. Biggest contributors to growth were Fishery, Corn and Palay.

Corn and Palay back Agriculture growth

Palay continued to grow but a slower rate of 4.7 percent from 12.6 percent, in the third quarter of 2007 compared to the same period last year.  The growth was attributed to the synchronized plantings in the third quarter after the dry spell experienced in the regions of ARMM, Bicol, SOCCSKSARGEN, Eastern Visayas, Cagayan Valley, Northern Mindanao and Zamboanga Peninsula.  Corn posted a significant growth of 14.0 percent from 1.1 percent. This was largely due to the expansion in area harvested, the availability of hybrid seed and good market price of corn.  Coconut increased by 1.8 percent from 0.8 percent a year ago, shored up by the appreciation in farmgate prices.  Banana expanded by 6.6 percent from 5.7 percent due to the continuous increase in area harvested and number of bearing trees in MIMAROPA, Northern Mindanao, Compostela Valley and Davao del Norte and Davao City.

Other Crops grew by 4.1 percent in 2007 from negative 0.2 percent boosted by the increased production of rubber, pineapple, mango and calamansi, among others.  Meanwhile, sugarcane declined by 9.6 percent from a 57.7 percent growth last year.

Livestock managed to grow by 1.1 percent in the third quarter of 2007 from 2.0 percent in 2006, brought about by the continued increase in the number of fatteners and animals slaughtered in abattoirs.

Commercial fishery leads Fishery’s growth

Fishery grew by 9.7 percent in the third quarter of 2007 from 4.2 percent in 2006 as a result of increased harvest by Commercial and Municipal Fishery.

Aquaculture, on the other hand, continued to grow albeit at a slower growth of 8.4 percent from 14.6 percent.

Forestry on the downtrend

Forestry declined further to negative 3.3 percent from negative 0.8 percent in the previous year.
