Maintained growth for AFF

AFF which accounted for 19.7 percent of total GDP, grew by 4.2 percent, only 0.1 percentage point higher than its year ago growth.  The subsectors which recorded the fastest growths were Forestry, Corn, Fishery and Banana while those with the weakest growths were Coconut including copra and Sugarcane.  The Forestry subsector put on an impressive recovery but with its tiny share of AFF at 0.08 percent, barely made an impact to the overall growth.  Major contributors to growth were Fishery, Corn, Other Crops, Palay and Livestock.

Corn and Other crops: major growth drivers for Agriculture

Palay maintained a positive but a slower growth of 1.7 percent compared to 6.9 percent last year.  Increased palay production was attributed to reported increases in area harvested in ARMM, Central Luzon, Cagayan Valley, Eastern Visayas and SOCCSKSARGEN.  In addition, these regions reported early plantings in October to December as a result of sufficient water from rain and irrigation systems and available support from the GMA Rice Program.  Cagayan Valley, meanwhile, adopted synchronized plantings to avoid tungro infestation. In SOCCSKSARGEN, farmers advanced their cropping period in anticipation of El Niño.

Corn, while experiencing growth slowdown this year nevertheless recorded a double digit growth of 11.4 percent from 22.1 percent last year.  Sustained growth in corn production was due to sufficient rainfall and crop shifting from garlic to yellow corn in Ilocos region due to increased demand.  Further, the corn cluster program interventions motivated farmers to cultivate corn.

Other Crops grew at a slightly faster pace of 3.0 percent than its year ago growth of 2.2 percent.  The gain was brought on by the increase of bearing trees and absence of strong winds in the flowering stage of mango.  Mango, it must be noted, accounted for almost 20 percent of the total production for Other Crops.  Cassava, on the other hand, benefited from the continued expansion in the contract growing areas of San Miguel Corporation, La Tondeña and Phil-Agro.

Poultry rebounded from a 3.8 percent decline the previous year to a 2.3 percent gain this year.  The recovery was driven by the significant increase in chicken production (commercial broiler) while chicken layers grew by 3.9 percent.

Livestock maintained a steady growth of 2.2 percent, which was largely contributed by the hog industry, attributable to the increased number of slaughtering and inventory of fatteners in CALABARZON and Bicol.

Favorable weather condition bolstered Fishery performance

Coming from a 4.9 percent gain last year, Fishery grew at a faster pace of 8.7 percent.    Bolstering the growth of the sector for the quarter was the favorable weather condition resulting in better catch and more fishing trips.

Notable recovery from a previous slump to a double digit growth was recorded for Commercial fishing as a result of the decrease in the price of gasoline, particularly in CALABARZON, the introduction in Eastern Visayas of additional deep sea shelters or aggregating devices and higher demand for fish processing.   For Municipal fishing, production benefited from the strict implementation of fishery laws against illegal fishing and the absence of foreign vessels in fishing grounds of Romblon which gave small fishermen bigger catch per trip.  Biggest contribution to growth came from the Aquaculture, which managed to sustain a positive growth, albeit at a slower pace.  Contributing factors were more intensive feeding, favorable weather conditions, and increased stocking due to effective dispersal program

Forestry recovers

Forestry rose from a 9.2 percent slump the previous year to a notable gain of 25.6 percent as a result of increased production of industrial tree plantation in CARAGA.
