AFF sustains upbeat performance

Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry, which accounted for 17.4 percent of total GDP, accelerated to a 4.1 percent growth from 1.7 percent last year, contributing 0.71 percentage point to the total GDP growth. Biggest contributors to growth were Palay, Fishery, Forestry and Livestock.

Palay and Livestock backs Agriculture growth

Palay rebounded to a significant growth of 12.6 percent in the third quarter of 2006 from the slump of negative 7.1 percent registered in 2005. This was largely attributed to the expansion in harvest area and higher yield per area as a result of the sustained usage of hybrid and quality inbred seeds and lesser occurrence of pests and diseases. Corn slightly grew by 1.1 percent from a huge 13.6 percent in the previous year. Sugarcane surged to a remarkable growth of 57.7 percent from negative 14.1 percent, shored up by higher prices and the increased export quota to the US.

Banana expanded by 5.5 percent from 15.2 percent due to increased area and number of bearing hills, bolstered by higher demand from local and export market. Coconut increased by 1.4 percent from 4.1 percent a year ago as coconut trees intercropped with corn benefited from fertilizer application in Mindanao. Meanwhile, Other Crops slipped to negative 0.5 percent from a positive growth of 2.0 percent last year, pulled down by the decline in calamansi, camote, coffee and abaca, among others.

Livestock grew by 2.4 percent in the third quarter of 2006 from 3.6 percent in 2005. Growth was largely due to the higher inventory and stock of fatteners of hogs and improved dairy production from commercial carabao and cattle farms.

Poultry recovered to a growth of 2.2 percent from negative 4.1 percent in the previous year, propped up by increased broiler production from commercial farms and higher inventory of chicken layers.

Aquaculture continues to lead Fishery’s growth

Fishery grew by 4.2 percent in the third quarter of 2006 from 5.9 percent in 2005. Aquaculture continued to lead the industry’s growth, strengthened by better farm management practices in milkfish culture and the expanded areas for seaweed culture in Mindanao. Similarly, more abundant catch from Bohol Sea and Visayan Sea led to higher municipal fish catch. Commercial fishing, on the other hand, declined during the period as moonsoon rains and the occurrence of typhoons reduced fishing efforts in Albay, ARMM and SOKKSSARGEN.

Forestry rebounds from downtrend

Forestry rebounded to a hefty growth of 93.4 percent from a negative growth of 61.1 percent in the same period last year, largely due to increased log production from industrial tree plantations in CARAGA.
