Agriculture Production Output in
Zamboanga Peninsula for the 2nd Quarter of 2008PALAYIRRIGATED PALAY (April – June 2008 Estimates)The total production output for Irrigated palay of Zamboanga Peninsula showed an increased of about 9.2 percent compared to the same period last year. This was attributed to the increase in area by about 10.6 percent. Two provinces contributed to the increased with Zamboanga del norte posted the highest by about 364.6 percent, followed by Zamboanga del Sur with 18.2 percent. This was due mainly to the operation of newly rehabilitated irrigation facilities, particularly in Bayog and Mahayag, coupled with early planting of some farmers due to adequate water supply during the first quarter 2008. Availability of good quality seeds from the DA RFU – 9 also greatly constituted higher productivity of Irrigated palay in Zamboanga del Norte. RAINFED PALAY (April – June 2008 Estimates) The production output for rainfed palay of Zamboanga Peninsula increased by about 57.8 percent, compared to the same period last year due to the increase in the area about 68.6 percent. The province of Zamboanga del norte posted alone the highest increase of about 427.8 percent due to the increase in the area by about 232.8 percent and productivity by 58.6 percent, mainly attributed to the availability of rain and the effect of GMA–RICE Program of D.A. RFU- 9.
CORNWHITE CORN (April - June 2008 Estimates) The total white corn production output for region 9 dropped by about 18.8 percent compared to the same period last year due to decrease in the area by about 13.9 percent and productivity by about 5.7 percent. Three provinces contributed to the decreased, with Zamboanga Sibugay posted the lowest by about 41.71 percent followed by Zamboanga del norte by about 28.63 and Zamboanga del Sur with 7.08 percent. The reason for the decrease was due to constant occurrence of rainfall that was observed this quarter which unfavorable for corn growth. YELLOW CORN (April – June 2008 Estimates) The yellow corn production output of the region increased by about 60.3 percent compared to the same period last year. Two provinces contributed the increase with Zamboanga Sibugay posted the highest of about 136.36 percent and Zamboanga del Sur with 106.29 percent, mainly attributed to the greater increase in area by about 60.32 percent. On the other hand, productivity of yellow corn decreases by 4.69 due to constant rain, but still it managed to constitute positive result for total corn production in Zamboanga Peninsula but not enough to compensate the decrease of white corn.
FISHERIES: The volume of fish catch in Commercial fisheries sector in Zamboanga Peninsula for the period April-June 2008 decrease by 16.75 percent compared to the same period last year. Three provinces contributed the decerease with Zamboanga City ranked first in production setback, exhibiting 23.76 percent lower to their total fish catch last year. This was attributed to lesser fishing trips due to high price of fuel and the effect of typhoon frank that hit during the last month of the reference quarter. Second, was Zamboanga Sibugay that posted 16.22 percent decrease compared last year attributed to the temporary dry-docking of some fishing operators in the early part of June 2008. Third, was Zamboanga del Norte which registered 14.73 percent due to occurrence of strong wind cause by typhoon frank. On the other hand, Zamboanga del Sur supposedly posted up positively figures by 24.94 percent but not enough to compensate the decrease of three provinces. The reason for the increase was attributed to unloading of some fishing boat coming from Zamboanga Sibugay province. Fish catch production of Municipal Fisheries sector in Zamboanga Peninsula went up by about 5.52 percent compared to the same period last year. Three provinces contributed the increase with Zamboanga City posted the highest by about 38.43 percent attributed to the occurrence of some pelagic fishes like Anchovies, Yellow fin and big-eyed tuna. Zamboanga del Sur also registered 30.23 percent higher compared last year due to the increase in number of small fishing boat operated this quarter. Third was Zamboanga Sibugay, that contributed 4.35 percent due to more catch of Anchovies and Roundscad that had been observe during the reference quarter. However, Zamboanga del Norte registered 27.80 percent decrease due to strong wind cause by typhoon that occurred during the period, april-June 2008. The production output of Zamboanga Peninsula for Total Aquaculture in Zambonaga Peninsula during the 2nd quarter CY 2008 decline by 1.20 percent. Two provinces contributed the decreased (Zamboanga City, and Zamboanga del Sur) this was due to the decrease in seaweeds by 13.18 percent, and 12.46 percent in two above-mentioned provinces. Besides, Seaweeds has a major contribution of about ninety percent of total aquaculture production in the region. This was attributed to the occurrence of typhoon and damages of algae, together with ice-ice problems in the region. However, in Zamboanga Sibugay they got positive result due to the increase in area compared last year. Although they experience the same phenomenon still their production rises due to wider area that had cultivated by farmers compared last year, attributed to the support of BFAR in the province. For brackishwater fishpond, the production of Milkfish and Tilapia went up by about 5.16 percent and 3.97 percent, respectively due to great demand particularly in Zamboanga del Norte attributed to lesser volume of marine product in the province. OTHER CROPS: The total production output of Major Commercial Crops in Zamboanga Peninsula for the period April-June 2008 survey round, decreased by 0.78 percent or 3,874.37 MT. lower compared to the same period last year. Abaca decrease by 5.95 percent compared to the overall production in Zamboanga Peninsula attributed by the decrease in area harvested in Zamboanga Sibugay Province and Zamboanga del Sur, coupled with the decrease in number of hills harvested in Zamboanga del Norte. Coconut w/ husk (Matured and Young) which has the greatest percentage contribution in terms of production also decreases by 1.24 percent due to lower yield attributed by long dry spell that manifested last year and some trees were already old and less productive. Coffee also registered a decrease of 2.02 percent due to some variety like Excelsa and Liberica were shifted to high valued crop like latundan which has a greater demand particularly in Zamboanga Sibugay province. However, Rubber (coagulated cup lump) increased by 4.64 percent in Region IX during the period. All provinces contributed the increase with Zamboanga del Sur rank first in production setback in absolute figures, exhibiting 9.87 percent followed by Zamboanga Sibugay 63.20 percent higher due to increase in number of productive trees tapped and proper caring attributed to higher price. The production output of Zamboanga Peninsula for April-June 2008 of Major Fruit Crops decrease by 3.63 percent or 2,947.95 MT. lower compared to the same period last year. Mango, all variety like Carabao, Piko and the others registered 10.88 percent , 16.80 percent, and 15.13 percent, respectively due to the occurrence of heavy rain and wind that hit during the flowering stage, couple with the failure of some artificial induction caused by same untoward incident in which all provinces were barely affected. Calamansi also registered 1.45 percent decreased. All provinces contributed the decline with Zamboanga del Sur posted the lowest in absolute figures, by about 7.64 MT., fallowed by Zamboanga City, 5.53 MT., Zamboanga del Norte, 3.1MT., and Zamboanga Sibugay by 1.31 MT. lower compared last year due to the decrease in area harvested and lower buying price. On the other hand, Banana posted 1.10 percent due to the increase in Latundan, Lacatan and Saba variety by about 2.05 percent, 1.57 percent and 1.63 percent, respectively attributed to the increase in yield brought by regular monitoring and inspection during the growing period. Three provinces contributed positive result and Zamboanga City Sur rank first in production setback (absolute figures), exhibiting 2.35percent attributed to good maintenance (thinning of plants/hills) resulting to much bigger bunches coupled with the usage of fertilizer and the effect of sufficient rainfalls. The production output of Major Vegetables Crops in Zamboanga Peninsula for April-June 2008 survey round increase by 10.36 percent higher compared to the same quarter last year. This was attributed to the increase in Cassava production by 9.82 percent due to increase in contact growers and stability of market established by San Miguel Corporation in Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay province. Camote also contributed 15.70 percent increase due to bigger roots as water is sufficient during growing period. Moreover, Peanut and Tomato, Mongo, Cabbage, Eggplant and other major vegetable crops registered an increase due to additional area harvested, well attended by farmers attributed to demand and good market price.
