Zamboanga Peninsula Fisheries Situationer, January-March 2011

Fisheries production for the first quarter of 2011 was 7.49 percent lower than the production of the same quarter in 2010. Production cuts of 34.29 percent for commercial fisheries, 7.49 percent for municipal fisheries were recorded during the reference period.

Commercial fishermen produced 41,597.92 metric tons of fish catch or 21,709.77 metric tons lower than last year's record. Three (3) areas, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga City registered production shortfalls. The decreased in production were largely attributed to lesser number of fishing activities and number of unloading due to weather disturbancesthat prevailed during the period. Commercial fisheries contributed about 24.1 percent to the total fisheries production in the region.

Municipal fisheries produced a total of 33,840.45 metric tons this quarter of 2011 or 2,738.68 metric tons lesser than 2010. Municipal fisheries accounted for 19.6 percent of the total fisheries production.

Aquaculture production was estimated at 97,227.94 metric tons. It exhibited an upward trend, from its last year's first quarter production by 10,459.75 metric tons or 12.05 percent. Seaweeds farmers produced 93,103.30 metric tons or 13.97 percent higher than last year's same quarter output. Aquaculture accounted for about 56.3 percent of the total fisheries production in the first quarter of 2011.
