Increased by 22.49% in the 2nd Quarter of 2009

Zamboanga Peninsula - Data from the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) reveal that corn production for the period April to June 2009 increased by 22.49 percent compared to the same period in 2008. This was primarily due to the 5.88 percent increase in the area harvested. Yellow corn production posted an increase of 86.27 percent, higher compared to the15.4 percent in the white corn production. Among the provinces, Zamboanga Sibugay posted the highest growth in corn production of 174.61 percent and followed by Zamboanga del Norte with 23.52 percent.

Meanwhile, Palay production, for the period April to June 2009, likewise increased by 1.89 percent compared to the same period in 2008. The slow pace of growth was primarily due to the 1.62 percent decrease in the production of irrigated palay. Zamboanga Sibugay posted the highest growth in palay production with 42.84 percent and followed by Zamboanga City with 21.78 percent.
