Agriculture Production Output in Zamboanga Peninsula for the 3rd Quarter of 2008

 

PALAY

 

 

      1. IRRIGATED PALAY (July-September 2008 Estimates)

       The total production output for Irrigated palay in the region showed an increased of about 15.37 percent compared to the same period last year. This was attributed to the increase in area by about 17.51 percent, two provinces contributed to the increase with Zamboanga del Norte posted the highest by about 259.54 percent due to movement of cropping pattern, early planting this year cause by the availability of water in the irrigation system. Zamboanga Sibugay also registered 13.48 percent higher, due to increase in area and yield by 4.34 percent and 8.77 percent, respectively. Availability of good quality seeds constitute the increment of the irrigated palay in the above-mention province.

 2. RAINFED PALAY (July-September 2008 Estimates)

       The production output for rainfed palay of Zamboanga Peninsula region raise by about 3.67 percent compared to the same period last year. This was attributed to the increase in area in three provinces. Zamboanga del Norte posted the highest by 55.57 percent, Zamboanga City by 18.18 percent and Zamboanga Sibugay 0.76 percent. However, productivity of rainfed palay was lower compared last year due to less fertilizer application and farm inputs due to the effect of higher prices.

 

CORN

       1. WHITE CORN (July-September 2008 Estimates)

       The total white corn production output of Zamboanga Peninsula region 9 goes down by 24.88 percent, Area by 19.68 percent and yield by 6.57 percent compared to the same period last year. Three provinces contributedt the decrease with Zamboanga del Norte posted the lowest by 74.92 perecent. Significant number of corn farmers stop planting corn due to high cost of fertilizer, shifted to other cast crops that can be grown without inputs application such as cassava, mongo and peanut. Zamboanga City registered 13.04 percent low due to decrease in area planted particularly in Vitali District (Linduman) because of excessive occurrence of heavy rain and some farmers shifted to cassava farming particularly in Ayala district. Zamboanga Sibugay also recorded 52.49 percent due to decrease in area planted and frequent occurrence of rain which is not favorable for corn farming.   

2. YELLOW CORN (July-September 2008 Estimates)

       The yellow corn production output of the region slightly dropped by 26.54 percent compared to the same period last year. Three provinces contributed to the reduction of production. Zamoanga Sibugay posted the lowest by 91.83 percent, Zamboanga del Norte by 77.88 percent and Zamboanga City 26.30. This was due to the decrease in area planted and the change in cropping pattern attributed primarily to climatic changes in the region.

OTHER CROPS:

COMMERCIAL CROPS:

         The production output of major commercial crops in Zamboanga Peninsula for this quarter went down by 1.76 percent compared same period last year. This was due to the decrease in production of Abaca and Coconut by 16.99 percent and 2.50 percent, respectively. Abaca registered smaller area harvested during the quarter due to lack of harvester and stripping machine particularly in Zamboanga Sibugay province that cause the production to go down by 46.25 percent. Coconut was noted to be the biggest contributing factor in term of production in the region also decline. Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Norte noted 0.22 percent and 8.03 percent decrease, respectively due to locally called “Sandao” as result of sudden change in climate. However, Coffee and Rubber were growing continually by 1.33 percent and 5.60 percent, respectively. Three provinces contributed the increase in Rubber production with Zamboanga Sibugay registered the highest by 10.90 percent due to the increase in number of newly tapped trees.

FRUIT CROPS:

            Major Fruit crops production output of Zamboanga Peninsula registered 1.73 percent increased or 1,530.19 MT higher compared same period last year. Banana registered 3.69 percent increase; three provinces contributed the increased with Zamboanga del Sur posted the highest of about 6.17 percent due to increase in number of hills harvested brought by good demand, particularly lacatan and latundan variety. Calamansi posted 0.33 percent attributed to the higher production yield observed this quarter brought by proper maintenance and inputs application due to good demand in the market. However, Mango production in Zamboanga Peninsula noted 10.67 percent lower compared last year. This effect was brought by continues rainfall wherein farmers are hesitant to induce trees because of greater risk of failures, instead some farmers were only waiting for natural food fruiting. All mango varieties in all provinces in Zamboanga Peninsula were recorded to be in negative result for this quarter.

VEGETABLE CROPS:

         The positive production growth of Major root and vegetable crops in Zamboanga Peninsula by about 0.21 percent was due to the increasing price trends. Major commodities like ; Mongo, Peanut, Cabbage, Eggplant, Tomato, and Cassava were increasing in its volume of production due to demand and good market value which farmers are encourage to plant and maximized their harvest area to compensate income from their basic needs . However, Comote and Onion were registered 10.02 percent and 2.35 percent, respectively due to the effect of continues rainfall of which unfavorable to these commodities.

FISHERIES:

COMMERCIAL:

            The volume of fish catch for Commercial fisheries sector in Zamboanga Peninsula for the period July – September 2008 decrease by about 9.55 percent compared to the same period last year. Two provinces contributed the increase with Zamboanga City ranked first in production setback, exhibiting 13.24 percent lower to their total fish catch last year. This was attributed to the decrease in fishing activity especially during the month of July’ 2008 due to dispute of SOPHIL and canning factories with regards to their buying price of sardines in Zamboanga City. Zamboanga del Norte also registered also noted same negative result due to Lesser fishing trips brought by higher cost of fuel. However, Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Sur registered 4.79 percent and 33.72 percent increase compared last year due to more unloading observed at Magdaup Commercial Fish Landing center and less encroachment of commercial fishing vessels in municipal water of Zamboanga del Sur.

MUNICIPAL:

            Fish catch production of Municipal Fisheries sector in Zamboanga Peninsula went up by about 14.86 percent compared to the same period last year. Three provinces contributed the increase with Zamboanga City posted the highest by about 79.43 percent attributed to the occurrence of some pelagic fishes and the intervention of BFAR (Distribution of fishing gears to some fisher folk) and less encroachment of commercial fishing vessels in municipal water. Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Sur registered 16.31 percent and 3.09 percent increase, respectively due to the increase in number of operators. However, Zamboanga del Norte noted 21.35 percent decrease due to scarcity of fish and high cost of fuel.

AQUACULTURE:

            The production output of Zamboanga Peninsula for Total Aquaculture during the Third quarter CY 2008 went up by 10.98 percent. Three provinces contributed the increased with Zamboanga Sibugay posted the highest in absolute figures due to increase in seaweeds production by 41.28 percent attributed to the support of BFAR and simultaneously harvest due to good market price. Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga City also noted 20.80 percent and 4.49 percent higher compared last year. Marine Fishcage slightly contributed an increase of 17.43 percent  higher compared last year due to good quality of fry in Zamboanga Sibugay. Oyster in Zamboanga del Norte contribute 0.86 percent and Mussel 8.32 percent increase compared last year.  However, Brackishwater Fishpond noted 4.73 percent decrease due to lack of feeds brought by higher price which some operators  were in temporary closure coupled with scarcity of supply of crablets particularly in Zamboanga del Sur. Freshwater fishpond also noted negative result due to insufficient supply of Fingerlings.
