Zamboanga Peninsula's Agricultural
Production Output increased in 2007
In the January to December 2007 situation report of the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics - Regional Operation Center 9, it shows that most of Zamboanga Peninsula's agricultural (palay, corn, fisheries and other crops) production output increased as compared in 2006. PALAY: The total palay production output of Zamboanga Peninsula for January-December 2007 cropping increase by about 7.69 percent or 39,558.00 MT. higher compared to the same period of the preceding year (CY 2006) due to increase in area harvested by 5.03 percent and yield by 2.47 percent. During the first early succeeding quarter of 2007, (1st qtr. & 2nd qtr.) Palay production of Zamboanga Peninsula was quietly lower compared to same quarter last year due to occurrence of long dry-spell and rehabilitation of some diversion canal, particularly in Zamboanga del Sur. However, through the effort of the Department of Agriculture and the support of GMA-Rice Program in the region, Palay production for the last (3rd and 4th quarter) semester registered a positive output to which maximum planting and harvesting occurred during this period. Sufficient rainfall, operation of newly rehabilitated diversion canal and the utilization of certified and hybrid seeds of some farmers instituted by DA greatly affected the increased in volume of palay production in the region for the year 2007. CORN: The total corn production output in Zamboanga Peninsula for January-December 2007 posted up 7.48 percent or 15,288.00 MT. higher compared last year (CY 2006) due to the effect of sufficient rainfall, availability of good quality seeds, particularly Yellow corn seeds instituted by the Department of Agriculture through the GMA-Corn Progam. Minor report of damage due to drought during the 1st quarter of the year only reported, unlike the other year (2006) of which excessive typhoon, particularly “Typhoon Reming” was hit in the later part of year (4th quarter 2006). Three provinces contributed the increased with Zamboanga del Sur posted the highest production setback by 14.69 percent due to increase in area and yield of yellow corn by about 155.74 percent and 4.38 percent, respectively. Zamboanga del Norte by 8.29 percent, Zamboanga City by 6.01 percent due to availability of good quality seeds and the support of the Department of Agriculture. Fisheries: The production output of commercial fisheries sector in Zamboanga Peninsula went up by 17.83 percent or 41,073.5 MT. higher compared to the same period last year. Two provinces contributed to the increased with Zamboanga City posted the highest, exhibiting 24.43 percent due to much larger volumes of fish catch unloaded at some commercial landing centers, like Permex and PFDA to met the demand of growing population in Zamboanga City and also for canning purposes. Zamboanga del Sur also posted 8.49 percent higher compared last year attributed to the effect of more unloading transported from Zamboanga Sibugay to Pagadian City to look for much higher prices. The municipal fisheries sector in Zamboanga Peninsula improved by 8.85 percent MT. compared last year. All provinces contributed to the increased with Zamboanga Sibugay posted the highest by about 32.23 percent due to manageable weather condition, unlike to the preceding year; Wherein the occurrence of strong wind cause by typhoon were very much disturbance in all fishing activities in the region. The aquaculture production of Zamboanga Peninsula registered 4.10 percent dropped due to the decrease in seaweeds production in Zamboanga Sibugay province. During the first quarter of 2007 some farmers was not able to managed to plant more due to financial constraints. Furthermore, for the second and third quarter of 2007, continuous occurrence of rain effect the salinity of water that hinder the growth of seaweeds coupled with the uncontrollable ice-ice disease that was being manifested by farmers. OTHER CROPS: The selected crops production of Zamboanga Peninsula for calendar year 2007 registered an increased of 3.99 percent or 88,574.231 MT. higher compared to the preceding year. Abaca registered 95.32 percent increased, thus farmers were encouraged to plant attributed to the “PLANT NOW PAY LATER PLAN” program of Fiber Industry Development Authority. Banana also posted 4.00 percent attributed to good maintenance (thinning of plants/hills) resulting to much bigger bunches coupled with the usage of fertilizer thus farmers longing for more production to met the demand of banana cue maker in the urban area as an alternative snacks. Coconut recorded 2.75 percent higher due to “INTERCROPPING” with corn adopted by some farmers, were trees shared the inputs applied to corn and some other crops to maximized farmers harvest to run-after much higher prices. Mango production also recorded 10.51 percent increased attributed to the usage of new technology by some farmers in inducing fruits, particularly in Carabao variety in mostly large plantation area. Rubber also posted 14.90 percent due to good market value, were more farmers maximized there number of trees tapped to achieve greater income. For rootcrops production of Cassava registered the highest by about 5.34 percent. The reason for the increased was attributed to the increase in number of contacts growers of San Miguel Corporation, particularly in Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay. However, Calamansi registered 2.97 percent decreased attributed to unattended trees due to prevailing lower price of the said commodity in the market, particularly in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay. |
