M WS Pamaran, a Paper Presenter in the upcoming 7th Mindanao Statistics Congress Ms Mewchun WS Pamaran, Regional Head of the National Statistical Coordination IX, will present her paper entitled, “An Analysis of the Economic Performance of the Zamboanga Peninsula: Towards an Economic Development”, during the 7th Mindanao Statistics Congress (MSC) to be held on August 18-19, 2011 at the UM Auditorium, UM Matina, Davao City along with 21 other paper presenters.
The purpose of the study was to analyze the factors affecting the economic performance of the Zamboanga Peninsula Region. Two phases were involved: the analysis of time series secondary data using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis and the conduct of the FGDs and KIIs for insights and recommendations for the improvement of the economic performance of the region.
The economic performance of Region IX, measured by the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), was analyzed and evaluated and this was correlated with socio-economic indicators: poverty incidence, unemployment rate and inflation rate. Other social and economic factors or drivers of the region’s economic growth were also identified.
Analysis of the secondary data showed that the region’s GRDP grew annually by 4.0 percent, on the average, from 1999-2008 while exhibiting fluctuation. The growth of GRDP was found highly correlated with the growth of Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry (AFF) sector, moderately correlated with Services and slightly correlated with Industry. GRDP growth was found moderately correlated with unemployment rate, while its relationship with inflation rate and poverty incidence was negligible.
The findings led to the conception of an economic development model for the Zamboanga Peninsula. Policy recommendations addressed the following: 1) economic performance; 2) job generation; 3) price stabilization; and 4) poverty reduction.
The economic growth of Region IX was therefore a jobless growth. It was not sustained and was not high enough to solve unemployment and eradicate poverty.
