Annual Unemployment for Zamboanga Peninsula Slightly Increase to 3.6 %

Using the average estimates of the four Labor Force Survey (LFS) rounds (January, April, July and October LFS in 2009), the annual unemployment rate or the annual proportion of unemployed persons to the total labor force in Zamboanga Peninsula in 2009 slightly increase to 3.6 percent from 3.5 percent in 2008 (based on the NSO's latest job data release).

The annual labor and employment statistics presented in this release used the average estimates of the four Labor Force Survey (LFS) rounds conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) on a quarterly basis for 2008 and 2009. The use of the average estimates for annual LFS data was based on the Official Methodology for Generating Annual Labor and Employment Estimates, approved and adopted as NSCB Resolution No. 9, Series of 2009 on the 6th day of July 2009, in Pasig City.

The unemployed include all persons who are 15 years old and over as of their last birthday and are reported as:

1. without work , i.e., had no job or business during the basic survey reference period; AND
2. currently available for work, i.e., were available and willing to take up work in paid employment or self employment during the basic survey reference period, and/or would be available and willing to
take up work in paid employment or self employment within two weeks after the interview date; AND
3. seeking work, i.e., had taken specific steps to look for a job or establish a business during the basic survey reference period; OR not seeking work due to the following reasons: (a) tired/believe no work
available, i.e., the discouraged workers who looked for work within the last six months prior to the interview date; (b) awaiting results of previous job application;  temporary illness/disability; (d) bad weather; and (e) waiting for rehire/job recall.

Underemployment, defined as those working under 40 hours a week, rose to 27.4 percent from 21.2 percent in January. The figure was up from 20.2 percent in April last year.
