MAJOR INDUSTRIES

The manufacturing industry is characterized by the predominance of cottage, small and medium scale industries and by the relative concentration of firms in the Zamboanga Peninsula, particularly in Zamboanga City, the commercial center of Western Mindanao.

Currently, major existing industries are dominated by fish and tuna processors, wood-based manufacturers and coco-based producers engaged either in local or international exports. Sixty-five percent of these are located in Zamboanga City.

The region's leading export product is canned tuna which contributes about 49 percent of total export products. Traditional products like plywood and coco-based products generate 39.0 percent of the total export values. Seashells, other marine products, plywood, veneer, pet food, African oil palms and furniture are also exported both in the domestic (local market outside the region) and international markets. Trading has also gained strength through the years.
