July 24-25
SINULOG and KINABAYO
A two-day celebration of the annual patronal feast of St. James. The
Sinulog, a dance procession, and the Kinabayo, an exotic and colorful
pageant re-enacting the Spanish-Moorish Wars, particularly the Battle of
Covadonga where the Spanish forces under General Pelagio took their last
stand against the Saracens. They were able to reverse the tide of the war
with the miraculous apparition of St. James, the apostle. The addition of
local color and innovations make this annual revelry a popular attraction
bringing thousands to the city.
June 22
City Charter Day
Dapitan City marks the signing on June 22, 1963 by then Pres. Diosdado
Macapagal with fitting activities manifesting pride in its becoming the
first Shrine City of the country.

December 30
Rizal's Death Anniversary
December 30 is declared a national holiday and Dapitan City, which served
as Dr. Jose Rizal's home for 4 years while he was in exile, highlights
this occasion every year with activities that focus on Rizal, including
lectures on his life, works, and ideas by distinguished speakers.
