Philippine Statistical System

The Philippine Statistical System (PSS) is a decentralized system that is composed of the following:

  • a policy making and coordinating body
  • a general purpose statistics producing agency
  • a statistical research and training center; and
  • all government agencies engaged in the generation of statistical information, either as their primary function or as a by-product of their monitoring, regulatory and administrative functions.

Statistical
Coordination
Board

highest policy making and coordinating body on statistical matters in the Philippines, the NSCB formulates policies, allocates responsibilities, coordinates and prescribes standards in the generation of statistics, as well as designate statistical activities that will be undertaken by the government. It also administers the National Statistical Information Center (NSIC)

Research and
Training
Center 

onducts statistical research and training programs in the field of statistics and related subjects to enhance the capability of government personnel and to improve the methodologies, concepts and techniques in data collection and processing

National
Statistics
Office

produces general-purpose statistics through periodic censuses of population, housing, agriculture, fisheries and establishments; surveys on business, industry, prices and households; and administrative statistics on domestic and foreign trade, business permits etc., and vital statistics through the Civil Registration System

Bureau of Agricultural Statistics

a bureau of the Department of Agriculture (DA), the BAS generates agricultural statistics, i.e., crop production, prices of agricultural commodities, volume and value of livestock traded, farm income and expenditure, farming systems, agricultural finance and investment, fisheries, and agricultural labor, through sample surveys

Bureau of Labor and   Employment 
Statistics

a bureau of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the BLES generates establishment-based labor data, such as labor turnover, labor practices, organizations, occupational injuries and illnesses and wage rates

Other government

produce statistics as by-products of their administrative or regulatory functions and in support of their primary functions



PSS
Goals



The overriding goals of the PSS for the period 1993-1998 are the following:

  • To respond to the data requirements of the development goals of international competitiveness and people empowerment; and

  • To promote efficiency of statistical operations through optimum use of available resources and adoption of cost effective measures.
