LSU Conducts Forum on New and Renewable Energy

The Leyte State University, a premier agricultural school located in Baybay, Leyte, conducted a Forum on New and Renewable Energy last October 17 at the DOLE Training Center, Tacloban City.    This is one of the major activities held in the region in celebration of the 17th National Statistics Month (NSM) which focuses on the theme, “Empowering Consumers Through Responsive Energy Statistics”.

Dr. Roberto C. Guarte, Director of both Plant Oil Technology Center (POTC) and Affiliated Renewable Energy Center (AREC) presented their significant inventions on the use of biodiesel and plant oil as alternative fuel for cooking stove.  The plant oil can be extracted from coconut and jathropa which are locally available.  Their research proved that Protos, the plant oil stove, is affordable, environment-friendly and safe to use.  Current users of the stove demonstrated its actual operation.  The said stove will be commercialized next year due to increasing demand from users.

A total of 47 participants from the business sector, including managers and representatives of hotels, restaurants and hospitals in Tacloban City, national line agencies, local government units, and the media attended the forum as prospective users of the plant oil stove and as partners in the promotion of the said invention.

The activity was hosted by the Department of Labor and Employment – Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (DOLE-RTWPB).
