NSCB VIII Elicits Local Stakeholders' Support in PSDP Formulation

The NSCB Regional Division VIII successfully conducted the Consultation-Workshop on the Formulation of the Philippine Statistical Development Program (PSDP) 2011-2017, held last June 22, 2011 at the Leyte SMED Center, Tacloban City.  Around 40 participants coming from the regional line agencies, LGUs, academe and the private sector actively participated in the workshop and provided significant inputs.

The PSDP is a mechanism for setting the directions, thrusts and priorities of the Philippine Statistical System (PSS) for the medium term.  It defines the priority statistical programs and activities designed to provide vital information support for the Medium Term Philippine Development Plan (MTPDP) 2011-2016 and serve as a tool for integrating and coordinating the statistical activities of the government.

NSCB Regional Head, Ms. Evangeline M. Paran, in her Opening Remarks, emphasized that the main objective of the consultation-workshop was to elicit stakeholders’ support in the formulation of the PSDP thru provision of inputs for the Chapter on Subnational Statistical Development.  She presented the Background of the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS), Overview of the PSDP, Major Challenges in the PSS, and the Thrusts of the Subnational Statistical System.

Ms. Riza N. Moraleta, SCO III of NSCB, presented initial inputs on Major Statistical Developments of Eastern Visayas for the period 2005-2010, Statistical Issues and Challenges, and the Proposed Statistical Development Programs and Activities of the Region for 2011-2017.  This was followed by a workshop to generate comments, suggestions and additional inputs from the participants.

RSCC Chair and NEDA Regional Director Buenaventura C. Go-Soco, Jr., in his Closing Remarks, stressed that although there has been great improvements in subnational statistical data, there is still a need to improve the accuracy, reliability and timeliness of existing statistics that is being generated.
