STATNews NSCB Disseminates 2009 Poverty Statistics
Ms. Evangeline M. Paran, NSCB Regional Head, presented and explained the
refinements in poverty estimation methodology and the resulting provincial
poverty statistics with back estimates for 2003 and 2006 as well as for 1991 as
benchmark for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Ms. Paran stated that poverty incidence among families in the region increased
from 31.1 percent in 2006 to 33.2 percent in 2009. The 2009 figure
indicates that 1 in every three families in the region is poor. Leyte
province was included in the top 10 provinces with highest percentage of poor
families in 2009 at 2.9 percent or a total of 110, 214 poor families.
Meanwhile, Eastern Samar and Northern Samar were consistently included in the
bottom poor provinces in 2006 and 2009.
Other
agenda items discussed during the RSCC meeting included the 2008-2009 Survey of
Food Demand for Agricultural Commodities in the Philippines, Statistical
Trainings for 2011, Report on Programmed Statistical Activities of RSCC Members
for 2011, and the Budgetary Thrusts of the Philippine Statistical System (PSS)
