 APEC-IT Seminar Held in Tacloban City 

             The Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Philippines, Inc. (JCCIPI) and the Overseas Vocational Training Association (OVTA), in cooperation with the North Luzon Growth Quadrangle Area – Project Management Office (NLGQA-PMO) and Fujitsu Philippines, Inc., conducted its fifth in a series of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Seminar on the Adoption of Information Technology (APEC-IT) on January 24-25, 2008 at Eastern Visayas State University, Tacloban City.  The activity was sponsored by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, Japan. 

The focus of the seminar was to provide basic skills in utilizing IT and related knowledge and to introduce IT in different organizations.  Around 150 representatives from the regional line agencies, local government units, academic institutions and small and medium enterprises coming from the different provinces and cities in the region participated in the seminar. 

Important guests in the seminar were Governor Jericho L. Petilla of the Province of Leyte and USec Hermenegildo C. Dumlao, Executive Director of NLGQA-PMO, who delivered messages emphasizing the relevance of ICT in the local and global economy. 

There were presentations on Philippine National IT Standards Foundation (PhilNITS) Certification and UP-IT Training Center’s course offerings and services.  Lectures on basic computer and internet concepts, and applications of ICT in governance, business and financial services, education and telecommunications were provided by Fujitsu Philippines, Inc.. 

            The seminar has stirred the interest of the participants on the practical applications of ICT in various fields and its role in improving the lives of the people.
