STATNEWS NSO Disseminates 2002 CAF Results The National Statistics Office (NSO) conducted a Regional Data Dissemination Forum on the 2002 Census of Agriculture and Fisheries (CAF) last June 23, 2005 at the Hotel La Rica, Tacloban City. Participants coming from government offices concerned on agriculture and fisheries, other statistical agencies, LGUs, academe and media were in attendance. Results of the census showed that the number of farms for agricultural use in Eastern Visayas totaled to 330.8 thousand, covering 723 thousand hectares. The region’s total farm area is the sixth highest nationwide and it comprised 32.5 percent of the region’s total land area. Palay was the major temporary crop in the region in terms of area planted. Coconut was recorded as the principal permanent crop in terms of the number of trees/vines/hills. Meanwhile, abaca was the second principal permanent crop. The number of municipal fishing operators increased almost three-folds from 0.582 million to 1.483 million, while commercial fishing operators tripled from 2.1 thousand to 7.1 thousand. The CAF is a large-scale government operation conducted by NSO in cooperation with BAS and BFAR geared towards the collection and compilation of statistics on the nation’s agriculture and fisheries sectors.
