NSCB Releases 2005 and 2007 Poverty Mapsof Leyte

The National Statistical Coordination Board Regional Division 8 (NSCB) releases the 2005 and 2007 Poverty Maps of Leyte in CD-ROM.  This is in response to the continuing demand for a comprehensive GIS-based poverty map that can be used by policy makers, local executives and development planners to locate the poor and describe their conditions using non-income measures of poverty at the municipal level.

The poverty mapping activity in Leyte is a collaborative effort of the NSCB and the Provincial Government of Leyte.  The activity has been institutionalized in the province with the awarding of ArcView GIS software from the United Nations (UN)-Habitat - Environment Systems Research Institute (ESRI) in 2005.  Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO) staff trained by NSCB collected the data and generated the 2005 and 2007 poverty maps.

Poverty mapping has been implemented by the NSCB for a total of 33 provinces and 3 cities in the country as of December 2009 with data support provided by the LGUs.  In Region VIII, poverty maps were already generated for the provinces of Biliran, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Northern Samar and Southern Leyte.
