Western Visayas readies for 8th Western Visayas Statistical Congress

     In line with the observance of the month-long celebration of the 19th National Statistics Month (NSM) this October, the Regional Statistical Coordination Committee (RSCC) jointly with the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and Philippine Statistical Association (PSA) Region 6 Chapter, will hold the 8th Western Visayas Statistical Congress on October 27-29, 2008 at the Iloilo Grand Hotel, Iloilo City. The Congress adopts the theme of the 19th National Statistics Month, which is “Demand-Driven Statistics: Key to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Development.” [Details]."

     October is just around the corner and the statistical community in Western Visayas, through the Regional Statistical Coordination Committee (RSCC), is finally set to open the 19th National Statistics Month (NSM) celebration in the region.

     All preparations for the month-long celebration were finalized in the just concluded 3rd General Assembly Meeting (GAM) of participating agencies and institutions yesterday, September 29, at the Jalaur Hall of NEDA. The lined-up activities for the month-long celebration are all geared towards attaining the theme of the celebration, which is “Demand-Driven Statistics: Key to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Development  [Details]."
 

NSCB Releases the Countryside in Figures: Iloilo, First Edition 2008 in CDRom

     The National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) announces the release of the Countryside in Figures: Iloilo, First Edition 2008 (CIF Iloilo: First Edition 2008) in CDRom. The CDRom is a compilation of statistical information about the province of Iloilo collected from data produced by various government agencies and from data available in different statistical publications [Details]."

     Western Visayas’ economy, as measured by the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), impressively improved in 2007, yielding a robust growth of 7.7 percent from 4.9 percent in 2006.  Among the 17 regions of the country, it is the 4th largest contributor to the country’s total GDP and the 5th fastest growing region in per capita GRDP posting a 5.7 percent growth in 2007.

      For three consecutive years, Western Visayas posted slight fluctuating trends in per capita index, 89.6 percent in 2005, 89.2 percent in 2006, and 89.7 percent in 2007 relative to the national average [Details].

Poverty incidence in Western Visayas slightly improved between 2003 and 2006

     The National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) released the 2006 official poverty estimates, showing that the poverty incidence in the region slightly dropped to 31.1 percent, down by 0.3 percentage points from its 2003 level of 31.4 percent. This 31.1 percent poverty incidence translates to 425,571 poor families, which is 7.2 percent higher than the 397,073 families in 2003.

     Poverty incidence is the proportion of families/individuals with per capita income/expenditure less than the per capita poverty threshold to the total number of families/individuals
