March is Fire Prevention Month. Every March of every year, each citizen cannot help but be reminded not only of the usefulness of the fire but also the damages it cause on people’s lives and properties when fire is not given attention and left neglected. Awareness on fire prevention, therefore, should not only be in March, but always. Report of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) RO reveals that fire incidents in the region is on the uptrend for the last three years (2008-2010), from a recorded blaze of 709 in 2008 to 1,862 in 2010, an increase by 101.95%. The 2010 blaze incidents claimed 19 lives, injured 84 people (77civilians and 7 firefighters), and damaged Php168.64 M worth of properties. Interestingly, property damages, however, dropped by 3.09%, from Php174.03 M to Php168.64 M in 2010. While figures show huge increase in the number of blaze incidents in 2010, but almost half (49.36%) of the incidents were only grass/forest fire, giving less harm to the lives and properties of the people. Grass/Forest fire increased by 407.73%, from 181 cases in 2009 to 919 cases in 2010. Across provinces, Negros Occidental and Iloilo posted the highest number of fire occurrences in 2010 with 917 and 804 blaze cases, respectively. Aklan registered the least with 25 blaze cases. In terms of damages, Iloilo had the highest worth of property damages reaching Php89.13 M, accounting for 52.85% of the region’s total damages on property. Negros Occidental had Php59.69 M, 35.39% of the region’s total damages on property. Guimaras had the least damages of less than 1 percent of the region’s total damages at Php1.55 M.
