(Posted June 28, 2010)

Region VI (Western Visayas) kept up its name as "top-producer" of carabao in the country, as it again outranked the other 15 regions in volume of carabao produced in 2009. Western Visayas (WV) had been top producer of carabao, dubbed as the "pambansang hayop" of the Philippines, for the last three years (2007-2009). In a year time, the region improved its carabao production from its 2008 level of 19,923 head to 20,071 head, an increase by 0.74%. This contributed 14.24% to total carabao production in the country in 2009. Other regions included as consistent "top-producing" regions, following WV, in the last three years are: Region II (Cagayan Valley) with 8.7% contribution; Region XII (SOCCSKSARGEN), with 8.6% contribution; and Region XI (Davao Region) with 8.4% contribution.
