WV remains as the top producer region of carabao in the country

Western Visayas region outranked other regions in volume of carabao produced in the country for three consecutive years (2010-2012). Despite the decreasing volume in production, Western Visayas remained as the top producer of carabao in the Philippines accounting for 14 percent of the country’s total production each year. Other regions included as "top-producing" regions, following WV, in 2012 are: Region XII (SOCCSKSARGEN) and Region XI (Davao Region) with 8.6% contribution each; Region II (Cagayan Valley) with 8.1% contribution; and Region VIII (Eastern Visayas) with 7.9% share to the country’s total carabao production.

In terms of growth rate, only 4 of 16 regions managed to improve production in 2012. These are Region III (Central Luzon) with 7.3 percent growth; Region VIII (Eastern Visayas) with 3.4 percent; Region 10 (Northern Mindanao) with 2.5 percent; and Region I (Ilocos Region) with 1.5 percent. The rest of the regions recorded down trend in production with ARMM and Caraga regions having a double digit reduction of 15.9 percent and 11.5 percent, respectively.

In totality, carabao production in the country continued to decrease for the last three years having the biggest drop of 3.2 percent in 2012 from 147,516 MT in 2011 to only 142,727 MT in 2012. Among the 16 regions of the country, only 3 regions increased production consistently from 2010 to 2012. These are the regions of Region 3 (Central Luzon) & Region 10 (Northern Mindanao) which improved their ranks in 2012 two steps from their previous rankings, and Region 8 (Eastern Visayas) which improved their ranks in 2011 and successfully retained in 2012.
