(Posted August 06, 2010)

The just-concluded news conference on the economic performance of Western Visayas gathered 23 media practitioners of radio, TV, and print, and six provincial/city information officers to share and discuss the situation of the Western Visayas’ economy in CY 2009.

The news conference was organized by the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) Regional Division 6 to officially release the final estimates of the 2009 Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of Western Visayas.  The forum is the 2nd news conference ever held in the region and made possible with the cooperation of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and National Economic Development Authority (NEDA). A 40-minute presentation of the highlights of the 2009 GRDP was done by the NSCB statistical coordination officers, after which an open forum ensued with the NEDA Chief of the Knowledge Management Division as the resource person. The PIA Chief Information Officer served as anchorman and moderator during the forum.

The lengthy discussion focused on the position of Western Visayas as the 3rd fastest growing region and the 4th largest contributor to national GDP, relative to the other regions of the country.  Volume of questions which dealt more on the “why’s” or reasons for the increase and/or decrease in the production levels of goods and services produced in Western Visayas in 2009 as well as the rudiments of the estimation process brought the news conference to extended hours in the venue.

The forum was closed with the announcement of the forthcoming statistical events like the 11th National Convention on Statistics, the 21st National Statistics Month celebration, the 1st World Statistics Day celebration in October 2010, and new arrivals of NSCB publications.
