      The result of the 2000 census of population conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) revealed that the population of Western Visayas grew at a rate of 1.56 percent in 1995-2000. The region's population reached 6,208,733 persons or an increase of almost 432 thousands persons over the 1995 census figure of 5,776,938 persons.

     Among the provinces, Negros Occidental recorded the largest population of 2.5 million persons, followed by Iloilo with 1.9 million persons. Guimaras, the smallest population at 141 thousand persons. Guimaras and Iloilo were the fastest growing provinces of the region with an annual growth rate of 2.43 percent and 2.10 percent, respectively while Capiz was the slowest at 1.0 percent
