The Department of Social Welfare and Development Regional Office 6 (DSWD)
served a total of 194 children who were victims of several
types of abuse in the year 2000. The figure is lower by 23.3 percent
over the 1999 cases.
A noticeable decrease of 42 percent in the number of sexually abused
children was recorded in 2000 over the previous year. It can
be noted that sexual abuse was the predominant form of child abuse
regionwide, averaging about 52.1 percent of all cases of child abuse
in the year 2000. Under this category, rape had the highest
recorded number of victims in the region with 52 cases. This was
followed by incest which victimized 37 children.
Almost all cases of child abuse
for the year 2000 showed a decrease except for abandoned and
physically abused/maltreated/battered children. The number of
abandoned children served by the Department increased by almost 4
times over the previous year.
