After a year-long search for achievers in
the field of statistics in Western Visayas, two awardees were finally chosen
and duly recognized “Achievers in Statistics in Western Visayas”
during the 22nd NSM Closing and Awarding Ceremonies on October
27, 2011 held at the Sarabia Manor Hotel, Iloilo City. Dr. Cherry T. Nepomuceno, Professor of Statistics & Director of Learning Assessment of the West Visayas State University (WVSU) garnered the award for the Pure* Statistics category and Prof. Vicente T. Balinas, Professor of Statistics & Director of BIDANI** of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas, Miag-ao, Iloilo garnered the award for the Applied* Statistics category. The search was conceptualized to give recognition to living statisticians whose dedication and long-standing commitment have contributed significantly to the promotion of statistics and has made a dent in the lives of the people in Western Visayas and society as a whole. Moreover, the initiative translates the theme of the World Statistics Day (WSD) “Celebrating the Many Achievements of Official Statistics” emphasizing on the core values: Service, Professionalism, and Integrity. Thus, nominees were judged in the three areas: professionalism (50%), service (30%), and integrity (20%). The first-ever search for achievers in statistics in Western Visayas was launched during the WSD celebration on 20 October 2010 (21st NSM) and recognition of the awardees took place on 27 October 2011 (22nd NSM). Final result of the search was announced by former NSCB Head Ms. Presentacion A. Penpillo, the agency Chairperson of the Technical Working Group on Search for Achievers on Statistics (TWG-SAS). TWG-SAS members were NEDA, NSO, DOST, PIA, UPV, WVCST, CHED, and PSA Region 6 Chapter. Dr. Nepomuceno and Prof. Balinas received a plaque of recognition, cash incentive, gift certificates, and tokens from BSP, Nuat Thai, and DSWD. The TWG-SAS proposes that the search will be undertaken every three years. As the search entails year-long activities, however, the next call for nominees (for Season 2) starts on October 2012 (23rd NSM) and the recognition of awardees will be on October 2013 (24th NSM), to coincide with every National Convention on Statistics (NCS) year.
