(Posted March 6,2009)

The Philippine National Police (PNP) Regional Office No. 6, through its Women and Children Protection Desk Unit, reports the significant reduction of cases of violence against women and children in Western Visayas.  From a high record of 452 cases in 2006, it notably decreased to 373 cases in 2007 and 268 cases in 2008, down by 17.5 percent and 28.2 percent for the last two respective years.

Across provinces, except for Aklan, which had increased cases from 2007 (30 cases) to 2008 (40 cases), all the five provinces managed to decrease commission of violence against women and children. Negros Occidental, which consistently recorded the highest number of cases since 2006 (234), however, showed diminishing cases from 160 cases in 2007 to 92 cases in 2008, a significant reduction by 31.6 and 42.5 percent, respectively.

As to type of cases, violation of RA 9262 or the anti-violence against women and children had the highest commission, followed by rape, physical injury, threat, and attempted rape.
