The year 2011 seems to be a productive year for both
palay and corn in Western Visayas. Data from
the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics revealed that during the 1st
quarter of 2011 both palay and corn production significantly improved by
52.3 percent and 78.7 percent, respectively. More than half of the region’s
total production comes from the province of Iloilo, the top producer of
palay and corn in the region. Palay production
for the 1st quarter of 2011 reached 642,749MT, higher by
220,675MT than the previous year’s same quarter production of 422,074MT. The remarkable rise
was brought about by the increases of 78.9 percent in rainfed palay
production and 35.5 percent in irrigated palay. High yield was
recorded in the provinces of Antique and Iloilo posting a growth of 114.2
percent and 93.4 percent, respectively. |
