In 2010, a total of 130,234 livebirths
were recorded in Western Visayas, the Department of Health (DOH)
report show. For every 15 livebirths, seven were girls.
Interestingly, more than three-fourths or 78.41 percent were
attended by skilled health personnel.
Among the provinces, Iloilo posted the highest number of livebirths
comprising 22.14 percent of the regional total. Of every three
babies born in the province every hour, there were more baby boys
than girls attaining a gender gap of 4.29 percent.

Western
Visayas remains as the 4th largest contributor
to the country’s fishery production

Fish is one of the major agricultural
products of Western Visayas. In 2011, the region produced a total
volume of 450,886.2 metric tons as revealed by the data of the
Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS). This figure gave the region
a 2.1 percent increase over its 2010 production of 441,557.9 metric
tons and made the region retains its place as the 4th largest
contributor to the country’s total fishery production for three
consecutive years (2009-2011).

After a year-long search for
achievers in the field of statistics in Western Visayas, two
awardees were finally chosen and duly recognized “Achievers
in Statistics in Western Visayas” during the 22nd
NSM Closing and Awarding Ceremonies on October 27, 2011 held at
the Sarabia Manor Hotel, Iloilo City.
Dr. Cherry T. Nepomuceno,
Professor of Statistics & Director of Learning Assessment of the
West Visayas State University (WVSU) garnered the award for the
Pure* Statistics category and Prof. Vicente T. Balinas,
Professor of Statistics & Director of BIDANI** of the University
of the Philippines in the Visayas, Miag-ao, Iloilo garnered the
award for the Applied* Statistics category.
