 The Western Visayas’ (WV) economy in 2009, as measured by the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), continued to grow at a faster rate of 5.9 percent compared to the 4.3 percent rate the previous year.  WV sustains its position as the 4th largest contributor to the country’s GDP. Of the 17 regions of the country, it is also the 3rd fastest growing economy in 2009 and the fastest among the three Visayas regions (Regions 6, 7 & 8). details

The economic performance of Western Visayas in 2009 showed impressive improvements   amidst efforts for recovery from the ill-effects of typhoon Frank, which devastated the region in the second quarter of 2008.  From a 4.3 percent growth in 2008, it accelerated to 5.9 percent in 2009. details

Twenty-nine media practitioners and provincial and city information officers attended the news conference on the 2009 Economic Performance of Western Visayas.

The just-concluded news conference on the economic performance of Western Visayas gathered 23 media practitioners of radio, TV, and print, and six provincial/city information officers to share and discuss the situation of the Western Visayas’ economy in CY 2009.details

Region VI (Western Visayas) kept up its name as "top-producer" of carabao in the country, as it again outranked the other 15 regions in volume of carabao produced in 2009. Western Visayas (WV) had been top producer of carabao, dubbed as the "pambansang hayop" of the Philippines, for the last three years (2007-2009). In a year time, the region improved its carabao production from its 2008 level of 19,923 head to 20,071 head, an increase by 0.74%.details
