The
Western Visayas’ (WV) economy in 2009, as measured by the Gross
Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), continued to grow at a faster
rate of 5.9 percent compared to the 4.3 percent rate the
previous year. WV sustains its position as the 4th
largest contributor to the country’s GDP. Of the 17 regions of
the country, it is also the 3rd fastest growing
economy in 2009 and the fastest among the three Visayas regions
(Regions 6, 7 & 8).

The economic performance of
Western Visayas in 2009 showed impressive improvements amidst
efforts for recovery from the ill-effects of typhoon Frank,
which devastated the region in the second quarter of 2008.
From a 4.3 percent growth in 2008, it accelerated to 5.9 percent
in 2009.

Region VI (Western Visayas) kept
up its name as "top-producer" of carabao in the country, as it
again outranked the other 15 regions in volume of carabao
produced in 2009. Western Visayas (WV) had been top producer of
carabao, dubbed as the "pambansang hayop" of the Philippines,
for the last three years (2007-2009). In a year time, the region
improved its carabao production from its 2008 level of 19,923
head to 20,071 head, an increase by 0.74%.details
