NATIONAL STATISTICS MONTH HIGHLIGHTS
LABOR SECTOR ON ITS 23RD YEAR

The 23rd year celebration of the National Statistics Month (NSM) this October focuses on the labor sector with the theme “Monitoring Progress on Decent Work Through Statistics: Pathway to Inclusive Growth". The celebration is spearheaded by the Philippine Statistical System (PSS) thru the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) as host of the opening ceremony and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) as host of the closing ceremony.

The NSCB issued Memorandum Circular No. 01-12 in June 2012, enjoining all agencies of the government, local government units, academic institutions and the private sector at the national and subnational levels to actively participate in and support the month-long celebration. Under the said circular, the agencies/organizations are encouraged to undertake activities that can be in the form of symposia, workshops, seminars, exhibits, and publications of statistical reports, among others. They can also display NSM streamers at their building façade following the prescribed design. In order to synchronize all efforts for the celebration, participating agencies/organizations at the national level and in the National Capital Region (NCR) are requested to submit a detailed list of their proposed activities to the NSM Steering Committee using NSCB-NSM Form 1 through the NSM Secretariat at NSCB, 2nd Floor, Midland Buendia Building, 403 Senator Gil J. Puyat Avenue, Makati City on or before August 31, 2012, For the regional celebration of the event, participating agencies/organizations are requested to submit their proposed activities to the Regional Statistical Coordination Committees (RSCCs) under the Regional Development Councils (RDCs) which are the designated coordination bodies for all NSM activities in the regions. The NSCB Regional Divisions (RDs) shall provide technical and administrative support to their respective RSCCs.

In the nationwide celebration of the NSM, awards will be given for a) Best NSM activity in 2011; and b) Best NSM Region in 2011. The celebration will also continue to recognize the contribution of media persons in advocating the use of statistics for informed decisions through the 4th NSM Media Awards. The annual award is given to a media reporter for valuing the extensive use of, as well as for the professional handling of statistics in his/her work and for making significant contributions in promoting, popularizing, and using statistics in information dissemination and other relevant purposes. The search for these awards is on-going and the awarding ceremony will be done during the 23rd NSM opening ceremonies in October.

The NSM is celebrated annually to promote, enhance and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics and at the same time ensure the support of the public in improving and enhancing the quality and standards of statistics in the country. It has also become a showcase of unity and cooperation among the members of the PSS and a forum for tackling issues and developments affecting the System. Details of the 23rd NSM celebration as well as the streamer design and NSM Form 1 for the activities can be accessed at the NSM website at http://www.nscb.gov.ph/nsm/
