MORE EMPLOYED BICOLANOS IN JULY

The number of unemployed persons in the Bicol Region decreased, with unemployment rate dropping to 5.4 percent in the second quarter of 2011. Results of the July round of the Labor Force Survey conducted by the National Statistics Office indicated an improved employment rate of 94.6 percent, 0.6 percentage point higher than the level in the same period last year.

Total population 15 years old and over reached an estimated 3.44 million persons in July, approximately 5.5 percent of the national total.

Across regions, Region II (Cagayan Valley) recorded the highest employment rate at 97.6 percent while the National Capital Region (NCR) posted the lowest at 89.1 percent.

The labor force participation rate or the proportion of those in the labor force to the population aged 15 years old and over dipped 0.8 percentage point from a year earlier.

Underemployment rate, or the proportion of employed persons wanting more hours of work to total employed persons declined by 3.2 percentage points from a year ago, settling at 34.3 percent. Bicol Region remained to have the highest underemployment rate among regions of the country, Region III (Central Luzon) having the lowest at 10.8 percent.
