MORE JOBLESS BICOLANOS IN JANUARY

More Bicolanos were out of job in January 2011, as employment rate declined to 92.9 percent from the same period a year ago. Results of the latest round of the Labor Force Survey conducted by the National Statistics Office shows unemployment rate accelerating by 2.0 percentage points, settling at 7.1 percent. The employment situation was generally better in January last year when employment rate stood at 94.9 percent and unemployment rate at 5.1 percent.

Across regions, Region II (Cagayan Valley) and Region IX (Zamboanga Peninsula) registered the highest employment rate at 96.9 percent while the National Capital Region (NCR) recorded the lowest at 88.0 percent.

The labor force participation rate or the proportion of those in the labor force to the population aged 15 years old and over dipped to 63.3 percent, 1.3 percentage points lower than the level recorded in the same period a year ago.

Underemployment rate, or the proportion of employed persons wanting more hours of work to total employed persons declined by 1.3 percentage points, settling at 35.5 percent. Bicol Region remains to have the highest  underemployment rate among  regions of the country, the lowest being Central Luzon with  9.7 percent.
