Women and Men in Bicol
Region
Violence Against Women and Children
Violence against
women and children is a concern that cuts across the whole spectrum of
society - classes, cultures, religions and regions. The socially defined
roles of women and children as the weaker sex and dependents - has
exposed them to a host of violent behavior from men and from adults. The
same socially defined roles coupled with some deep-seated cultural beliefs
deter victims from seeking redress for the violence that had been inflicted.
Recent years however, saw an increasing awareness of this problem, and
appropriate policies and mechanism are slowly being instituted. Among these
mechanisms is the creation of the Womens and Children Community Desks in
police stations. Among such policies are the various laws enacted to address
various forms of violence against women and children. The major concern that
should be addressed however, is the cultural barrier that prevents would be
perpetrators and would be victims from allowing the violence to happen.
Generally,
incidence of violence against women in the Bicol Region is on a decline. The
same cannot be said however of violence against children.
