Women and Men in Bicol
Region
Population and Families
The population is
the most important resource in an economy. Changes in the demographics of an
area constitute an important factor in charting its social and economic
development. The family, on the other hand, is considered the basic social
unit. The health of a community, in both social and economic sense, depends
on the health of individual constituent families.
The Bicol Region
accounts for 6.1 percent of the country’s population as of May 2000 with an
average annual growth rate of 1.83 percent, lower than the country’s average
largely due to out-migration Women comprise about half of the population, an
almost equal share with men in the region’s human resource capital.
Harnessing women’s full capacity in the task of social and economic
development however still face constraints brought about by lingering gender
role definitions. While improvements in shared domestic responsibility
between women and men have been noted in recent years, majority of the
burden of changing population sizes and family compositions and limited
resources is still borne by women.
This section
presents the population structure of the region based on the censuses
conducted by the National Statistics Office.
