One in about five couples in the Bicol Region used traditional methods of Family Planning in 2006. Traditional methods include calendar, rhythm, periodic abstinence, withdrawal, and other methods. Bicol Region also had the second highest percentage of couples not using any method of family planning based on the 2005 and 2006 FPS results. In 2006, some 56.0 percent of couples do not use any family planning method, down by 0.8 percentage point from the 2005 level. The Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) topped all other regions with 84.1 percent in 2005 and 80 percent in 2006. |

Appropriate health care of the mother (before, during and after pregnancy) reduces the risks of pregnancy-related illnesses/deaths not only of the mother but of the child as well. The 2006 FPS however, showed a decrease of 1.3 percentage points (from 10.1 percent in 2005) in the percentage of children whose mothers have received two doses of tetanus toxoid vaccine during pregnancy with reference child. Reference child refers to the youngest surviving child of the mother at the time of the survey. An increase in births (in the 5 years preceding the surveys) attended by skilled medical practitioners from 45.4 percent in 2005 to 48.8 percent in 2006 was noted. Skilled medical practitioners include doctors, midwives and nurses. The percentage of children below 5 years old who were protected at birth against neonatal tetanus increased by 5.8 percentage points from 68.9 percent in 2005. The intensive campaign on Vitamin A supplementation by the government likewise resulted in the increase of 6.7 percentage points (from 72.3 percent in 2005) in the percentage of children aged 6 to 59 months old who received Vitamin A supplements in the 6 months preceding the survey In planning the family, the couple determines the number of children based on the couple’s beliefs/moral convictions, religious/cultural/social beliefs and their health and economic circumstances. It also means proper spacing of children and giving birth at the right age and at the right time. Family planning expands the choices available to couples particularly women, who are usually the ones trapped in the vicious cycle of having too many children resulting to few opportunities for other kinds of activity. The use of any family planning method however, should be based on informed choice among couples. Source of basic data: National Statistics Office Date posted: November 15, 2007 |
