| Factsheet RV-FS#03, Series of 2009 Did you know that . . . About half of traffic accidents in 2008 involved motorcycles? There were 1,253 reported traffic accidents involving 1,449 motor vehicles in 2006-2008. Around 42.7 percent of motor vehicles involved in these traffic accidents during those years were motorcycles. The data recorded by the Philippine National Police also showed that tricycles comprised 18.7 percent of motor vehicles involved in the traffic accidents during the past three years. Traffic accidents the past three years involved 1,888 victims, injured 1,387 persons and claimed the lives of 408 persons.
Among provinces,
Camarines Norte topped the list in 2008 in terms of traffic accidents
involving motorcycles at 79. It was followed by Masbate at 72. In terms of
the proportion of the number of motorcycles to the number of motor vehicles
involved in traffic accidents however, the highest was recorded in
Catanduanes in 2007 where nine motorcycles were involved in all seven
traffic accidents. This was followed by Albay where 44 motorcycles were
involved in 54 traffic accidents in 2008. |

Generally, motorcycles were involved in more traffic accidents than any other motor vehicle in the region during the past three years. The only exception was in Catanduanes where there were more tricycles involved than motorcycles in traffic accidents in 2008. Motorcycles and tricycles were the only motor vehicles involved in the traffic accidents in Catanduanes in 2008. The increasing accidents can be linked to the increased number of motorcycles on the road. Records from the Land Transportation Office (LTO) showed that registration of motorcycles and tricycles steadily increased over the years. From 2000 to 2008, registration of motorcycles and tricycles increased by 148 percent, the highest among motor vehicles registered with the LTO. In 2007, the increase was 8.1 percent, the third highest motor vehicle registration.
In 2008, registration rose to 14.2 percent, the second highest motor vehicle registration. Motorcycles became more popular the past years as fuel cost became more expensive and motorcycles become more affordable. The proliferation of cheaper imported motorcycles may have also helped increase the patronage of people on motorcycles. During these times of rising oil prices and worsening traffic problems, many Filipinos have resorted to motorcycles as their primary means of transport. These vehicles prove to be easy to maneuver during heavy traffic and are fuel-efficient.
