24 out of 100 students in tertiary level were enrolled in
Teacher Training and Education Program during SY 1998-99 in Region V?

Enrolment in the tertiary education during the SY 1998-99 in Region V reached 97,474, an increase of 35.5 percent over the 71,952 enrolment during SY 1997-98. The increase was brought about by higher enrolment in nine out of ten programs leading to Baccalaureate Degrees offered by tertiary education institutions in the region. The biggest bulk of enrollees was in the Teacher Training and Education Program with 23,811 or 24.4 percent of the total enrolment in the entire region. This translates to about 24 per 100 students enrolled in this program. Furthermore, enrolment registered an increase of 42.8 percent than SY1997-1998. Commerce/ Business Management Program, which topped all programs in SY 1997-98, was second with 22,750, higher by 18.5 percent than the previous School Year.

The other programs that complete the top five in terms of level of enrollees during SY 1998-1999 were Engineering and Technology, Arts and Sciences and Maritime Education. These courses, respectively, accounted for 14.9 percent, 11.9 percent and 7.5 percent of total enrolment. The top five programs already comprised 82 percent of total enrolment.
  

Meanwhile, the Arts and Sciences enrolment was more than twice of the previous school year's level. On the other hand, Maritime Education surpassed Information Technology (IT), the fourth ranking program in SY 1997-1998, with an enrolment higher by 3.4 percent. Furthermore, Maritime Education experienced a higher rate of increase (45.8 precent) than IT which went up by 4.0 percent only.

Religion/Theology (1.2 percent of total enrolment), Law and Criminology Education (2.0 percent) and Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery and Veterinary Medicine (3.0 percent) consistently had the lowest enrolment. These three programs accounted for 6.2 percent of total enrolment during SY 1998-99. While enrolment in these programs was relatively low, an increment in Religion/Theology was noted at 112.8 percent. On the other hand, enrolment in Law and Criminology went down by 7.3 percent.
