Factsheet RV-FS#05, Series of 2000 Did you know that . . . the Bicol
Region has an average of 10.3 cubic meters
By this year too, standing timber in these production forests would have reached 4,318,019 cu. m. or an average of 10.3 cu. m. of standing timber per hectare of production forest. Among provinces, Camarines Sur has the biggest area comprising 31.8
percent of the total production forests of the region. Albay and Camarines
Norte have the smallest areas each comprising only 9.8 percent of the
region's total. |

In terms of standing timber, Catanduanes had the biggest stock at 1,966,956 cu. m. while Sorsogon had the least at 201,691 cu. m. These figures make Catanduanes' production forests the most dense at 32.1 cu. m. of standing timber per hectare of production forest or three times more than the region's average. The presence of timber does not only benefit wood or carpentry works. Trees themselves do more than what most people realize. Trees are able to hold water and are one of the factors that can prevent flooding. Forests and trees also act as "sinks" or absorbers of carbon dioxide and other pollutants. As much as 50 percent of the world's supply of carbon dioxide is absorbed by forests, trees and plant life. Preserving the forests and planting more trees are practical approaches in preserving Mother Earth. Estimated
